   Tool Swap Mythology

        Rockler San Diego

   Much Misc.

Tool Dealers and Collectors have been friends with the San Diego Fine Woodworkers for a number of years. During that time many of us have attended their annual Fall and Spring Parking Lot Sales, which are held at Rockler Woodworking and Hardware in San Diego. Rockler is a retail store that offers a full-range of quality woodworking supplies and a variety of classes. Through this shared event, we have all formed a fine partnership.

Tool Dealers have always loved selling to Woodworkers because they appreciate good tools. They know that old tools feel better and usually out-perform anything new on the market. Users (from furniture makers to do-it-yourselfers to Palomar College woodworking students) love buying from us because we bring good quality old tools to the sales. Many of these tools are duplicates from our collections or just good deals that we couldn’t pass up at our local flea markets.

"I’m NOT a Collector" is heard over and over at an Old Tool Swap Meet because everything Users buy is ‘for a purpose.’ They are adamant about that as they haggle over prices. They seem to think that simple qualification should make the tool cheaper. But Dealers and Collectors patiently explain the current value of old tools and in between the haggling, bits and pieces of information and history are passed on the the potential buyer.

An Old Tool Swap Meet provides an arena for Dealers, Collectors, and Users to meet and exchange goods and information. It’s fun for those of us who collect to hear how a particular tool will be used to finish a project. It’s also fun to try and convince some of these Users (who over the years have bouoght more tools than they’ll ever be able to use in a lifetime) that there just might be the seed of a Tool Collector or potential Tool Dealer underneath that Fine Woodworker veneer. -LP
