STANLEY MAKES A ZIG ZAG RULE STRONG ENOUGH TO LAND A 17-INCH BASS

In 1966, a Stanley yellow folding wood 6-foot Zig Zag Rule was made into a usable fishing pole and Paul Kukonen, member of the All American Casting Team, was lured into using it to catch a fish from Flagg Pond in Shrewsbury, Mass.

A Stanley Tool ad campaign with a "dramatic theme" was launched in consumer magazines across the nation.  Hardware stores were provided with counter cards, posters and even a free book offer.  With every purchase of a Zig Zag Rule, the customer could choose a book on Hunting, Fishing, Golf or the classic Stanley book, How to Work with Tools and Wood.  The hope was to introduce a new kind of customer, the American Sportsman, to the joy of owning Stanley Tools even if they only used the first one to measure their catch of the day. -LP
